The Battle of Brandywine, September 11, 1777 was General Washington's attempt to prevent the General Howe from capturing Philadelphia. Washington failed, but absolute disaster was prevented by the exertions of Major General Gilbert de Motier, Marquis de Lafayette who was wounded during the battle.
